PORCELAIN ETCHINGS

On a mission to bring porcelain into my life, and drawing back into it, I embarked on an artist’s retreat of sorts, with a vague plan to ‘draw’ on porcelain…

After a month of wheeling around Connemara drawing and taking photos, and experimenting with the results back in the studio in Galway, I finally made a breakthrough that felt like the perfect alchemy of the two media. Unlike a flat page or canvas, the use of clay provided a sculptural surface for the oxide drawing, so the final image is a unique blend of the additive properties of painting and the subtractive properties of carving, increasing depth and complexity. I think it’s really powerful in the monotone versions, but the coloured versions have a crispness that’s really appealing too.
