Hi!
I create in clay from my studio in Dublin, near the beach and the mountains, and I am an active member of Ceramics Ireland.
I’ve worked with clay since my degree in the National College of Art & Design. From there I trained and worked in production pottery and now my work varies from thrown-ware to one-off ‘etchings’. That variety is why I love clay… no matter what mood I’m in, or idea I want to explore, for me, there’s always a response in clay.
Much of my early work focused on functional stoneware - bowls and mugs, platters and jugs - ‘production pottery’ - which I continue to make, enjoying the craft of wheel-throwing, and the element of surprise from the varying glaze mutations every time I open the kiln door. As my work developed, I began to crave a freer approach to each piece, to explore more ideas - this time in porcelain; and the journey, challenges and rewards of the creative process. So began a new departure.
Unlike stoneware, the raw-fired porcelain clay to me is a thing of beauty on its own - its delicacy, its touch, the glistening white ‘spearmint chew’-coloured finish. I could go on! Suffice to say, I love it and it has given me the means and inspiration to indulge creative expression in every piece I make. The clay itself is a core part of the aesthetic and it is heightened through minimal yet intricate decoration.
Be it the radiation of colour that comes from the Colour Bursts, the intricacy of the etchings, the strength of the large stoneware pieces, or the fact that I only drink from my porcelain beakers when I have time to savour the moment; my aim is to create pieces that are not simply vessels or adornments, but to enrich your daily life by creating prompts for pause.
